Straight out of the Movies

Mayfield, East Sussex

American-inspired Gothic style

In a Nutshell

A kitchen fit for a movie star which brings all the glamour of Hollywood to our client's corner of the Home Counties.

The Brief

Our brief was to recreate the kitchen from the 1998 movie Practical Magic starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Our client had fallen in love with the movie, and with the New England style, and wanted to bring a touch of Hollywood to her own home.

In addition to meeting the client’s aesthetic brief, we have also answered their call for functionality in creating a kitchen that is easy to cook and socialise in, with everything conveniently located and within easy reach.

The large 2.8 metre central island is the ‘hub’ of the room, with plenty of space for seating as well as food preparation.

Throughout the design there are numerous references to New England style, with tongue and groove paneling adding texture, as well as mesh door panels adding interest to the larder.

All of the cabinetry has been hand-painted with a subtle difference between the shade of grey used on the cabinets and the slightly darker shade used on the island. The finished result is a true reflection of the film Practical Magic.

The client opted for a 6 door Aga range cooker in a classic white, contrasting the large, freestanding fridge freezer and cleverly blending the quintessentially English features with the room’s nod to Americana.

The hand painted, in-frame cabinets with an intricately bevelled door design are topped with Silestone quartz worktops in Bianco Rivers.

Without a doubt our favourite element of this kitchen has to be the glazed archway. Inspired by the film, and in keeping with our client’s brief, this is a design ‘first’ for Rencraft. Of particular note are the hand carved ‘criss-cross’ upstands which support an arc of glazed cabinetry sitting above.

This kitchen also features some other Rencraft favourites –  a ‘secret door’ to the utility room, an exposed pan shelf below the island and a traditional plate rack and open shelves for recipe books.
