The Brief

This busy, young family were refurbishing their existing family home and wanted a kitchen with plenty of storage and a large island where all four children could sit, eat and chat.

Our clients also wanted the new kitchen to sit comfortably within the large, open-plan living space which included a snug area for relaxing and a large dining table for entertaining.

Ample storage was another must-have and so we designed lower level cupboards within the kitchen island for the children’s arts and crafts which they could access easily.

We handmade, in-frame doors in this Shaker-style kitchen which were then hand-painted in two subtly different shades of blue by Farrow & Ball, and topped with 30mm quartz worktops.

Bespoke cabinetry includes a double-door larder, a large island which looks out into the room and includes a dedicated breakfast cupboard enabling the children to help themselves to cereals each morning.

We also designed and built a hexagonal corner cupboard to provide additional storage in an awkward and previously empty space, as well as a bespoke spice rack within the original chimney breast.

The overall look is classic in style, with clean lines and traditional features including an over mantel and retro tiled splashback which complement the client’s choice of a Neff oven stack, induction hob and Quooker tap.

30mm quartz worktops reinforce the delicate, light and airy feel, while finishing touches include living brass cup handles and knobs with matching hinges.

With a busy lifestyle, it was important to design a space which allowed the family to relax and unwind together and the end result is a beautiful, calm and inviting space full of charm and elegance.

The untreated brass handles, whose patination will continue to evolve over time, were an inspired choice and one which complements the timeless Shaker style and tranquil blues perfectly.
