Penthouse flat in period property

In a Nutshell

Light and airy penthouse space with a super sleek SieMatic kitchen, home office suite and stunning bar area.

Our Aim

Rencraft’s main showroom has been based at 81, Calverley Road in Tunbridge Wells for over 20 years. At the top of the showroom there was a flat, which 18 months ago became available and so we decided to extend the Rencraft showroom by turning the space into a penthouse.

One of our key points of focus was the journey up to the top floor as we wanted the experience to be luxurious and a good representation of Rencraft and our eclectic style. The aim of the penthouse is to emphasise the contemporary design work we’ve been doing for years, but haven’t been able to display in our showrooms. To achieve this a new staircase was put in, rooms were redivided and walls were taken out. In the new, larger kitchen space we disguised the beam between the two original rooms with a coffered ceiling.

Our main aim was to create one big kitchen which we could use for events so that we could invite our clients to enjoy delicious food from local chefs, whilst at the same time showcasing what we do in terms of kitchen design and the quality of our work, but also allow people to experience first-hand how certain features work and appliances function.

View Kitchen Inspiration

To showcase another string to the Rencraft bow, we designed a super-sleek contemporary look and layout within our team and decided to use SieMatic for the furniture. We included tall banks of cabinetry housing a larder, wine cooler and fridge, meaning that the space as a whole has got ample storage. However, rather than fill it with wall-to-wall with furniture, we chose more of an interior design feel and included elements such as a freestanding glazed double cupboard.

We decided to use an old chimney breast which runs up through the building to house two Bora ovens. We then stone clad the wall to create a feature and added wood acoustic panelling. To complement the ovens we put a Bora hob, Tepan and downdraft extractor set in limestone on the island. We chose to use natural materials for all our worktops in the penthouse as they are great for creating individual, bespoke finishes, as each piece of marble is individual to that space – no two pieces are ever the same.

To bring the whole space together we collaborated with Buster and Punch and used their handles, lighting and ironmongery we worked with Modus Vivendi on AV, lighting and TV. In addition, we used Eskimo for the radiators and in some of the cupboards we have bespoke ceramics made by Chris Prindl from Prindl Pottery in Cornwall, who we regularly visit. Finally, we have a great collaboration with Borough Kitchen as they have two of our kitchens in their cook schools (one in Battersea and one in Islington), and so all of our pots, pans and other cookware were sourced from them.
