A Tale of Two Islands
Single storey renovation
Our client was renovating a bungalow and wanted to add a bright, fun and modern feeling kitchen.
Our client was keen to marry a modern design with some more traditional elements, as well as make the most of the light from the Crittall windows and the view of the patio and swimming pool.
To satisfy the first part of the brief we designed a run of Shaker-style cabinetry around the cooking zone which we hand-painted in teal and dressed with aged brass handles to complement the client’s Lacanche range cooker.
To capitalise on the view to the garden we designed a modern, double island with the space in between allowing the eye to travel uninterrupted from one end of the room to another, with the added benefit of defining the two separate zones of this otherwise open-plan living space.
One island has been given over to food preparation, with the sink positioned close to the range cooker, the bespoke larder cupboard and the integrated appliances, so creating an efficient work area.
On the other side of the room, the second island provides a space for casual dining, relaxing and entertaining with the slightly raised breakfast bar area, an integrated Miele wine cooler and space for four bar stools.
Pockets of orange have been added in the central aisle, helping to smooth the transition across to the seating area and the run of bright, flat-fronted push-open storage cabinets.
Each island has been topped with 60mm thick quartz worktops, complete with waterfall edges. The island closest to the Lacanche range cooker houses the integrated Miele appliances which include two dishwashers, a fridge and a freezer whilst the other island boasts an integrated Miele wine cooler.
This kind of statement design really is bespoke at its best and it was an honour to win British Design & Manufacturing Award at the 2020 D Awards for this kitchen. The entire space is so bold, so colourful and so personal to our client that we simply love the whole room and we were only too happy to turn our client’s dreams into reality.
The client’s own ‘Let’s Stay Home’ light installation says it all – when you have a kitchen as stunning as this, there really is nowhere else you need to go!
