A Work of Art

Gothic-style Victorian Manor House

In a Nutshell

This exciting bespoke design was created in collaboration with our client and interior design consultant, Ashton Taylor-Smith, who wished to relocate the kitchen to the dining room of this spectacular Grade II Listed Manor House.

The Brief

This project presented us with a combination of a large open space in which to design a kitchen twinned with the exciting challenge of incorporating stunning period features from the original dining room which our client wished to marry with modern, clean lines in the middle of the space.

As such, we were asked to design a central kitchen island which would appear like a contemporary art installation of “pod” which had just landed in the middle of the beautiful, character-filled room. It was of paramount importance that the new kitchen design should complement the period features of the room and so we carefully chose materials and lighting which would allow the design to evolve as the light and purpose of the room changed throughout the day.

To balance the need for functionality with the aesthetic elements of the kitchen, we designed one side of the island so that all the appliances would be housed on one side. We then hand painted these drawers in Mahoghany by Farrow and Ball, which we also used on the cabinetry surrounding the oven stack at the end of the room.

On the opposite side of the island, we used specially sourced metallic bronze panels with a patina finish to front the run of push opening drawers which we built with walnut interiors. This metallic effect is further complemented by the use of a customized brass finish on the Quooker and bespoke brass handles.

To accentuate the feel of a work of art, LED lighting was installed within the glass-fronted cabinets and beneath the Silestone Quartz worktop, allowing the look of the kitchen to transform effortlessly from daytime into night.

To provide a fully functioning kitchen within this centralised design, we installed Fisher and Paykel dishwasher drawers, Hotpoint fridge drawers, three BORA hobs, two BORA extractors and a sink with a customised Quooker tap on one side of the large 4 metre island.

A Miele oven stack was positioned on the middle back wall, surrounded by glass fronted cabinets, to remain in keeping with the brief.

It was a privilege to design and build such a unique kitchen in a property steeped in history. To think that Winston Churchill regularly enjoyed dining with friends in the same room is a wonderful thought!

It will be fantastic to see how this kitchen continues to evolve as the patina finish on the metallic drawers will develop over time, so living up to our brief to create a living, breathing work of art.
