A substantial new build, family home.
A whole house project including an open plan kitchen, reading room, playroom / TV snug, master bedroom suite, hallway and an understairs cupboard.
The Brief
When our client first came to us they were looking for an open plan kitchen which would allow them to cook, dine and socialise as a family at the end of a busy day. As their house build continued however, so did their requirements, and the brief was extended when we were also asked to design and handcraft furniture for the rest of the home.
The key desire on our client’s wishlist was for the whole house to be bright and airy, and for each room to flow with a common, central theme. They also favoured a more traditional Shaker-style look but wanted to make the most of their high ceilings, and so we handmade our cabinetry to reach the full-height of the rooms, so giving ample space for storage.
After installation we hand-painted the cabinetry in the same soft-grey tones throughout the home and added additional interest and colour with the use of sawn oak for the slab doors on the kitchen island and cupboard interiors, as well as walnut for the dressing table in the master bedroom suite.
The beauty of this kitchen is in its open plan design which makes the most of the natural light which floods into the space from the two sets of double doors and windows either side of the sink area. Our clients were keen to create a social space and so we created a large kitchen island with plenty of seating (and a handy wine chiller!) where we also positioned the hob looking out into the dining and seating areas.
In order to provide a more formal dining space in addition to the kitchen island, we also handmade a 2.4 metre-long oak dining table. The table’s design complements the kitchen’s Shaker-style doors with their subtle bevel detail, as well as the flat-textured oak panel on the island.
To ensure there was ample storage we also built a three door larder cupboard which sits perfectly amongst the full height cabinetry which we hand-painted in neutral tones and styled with satin nickel knobs from Armac Martin.
Our clients chose two stacks of ovens from Miele including a combi, steamer and warming drawers, as well as two Miele dishwashers, a wine cooler and large integrated fridge freezers. All these high-end appliances were complemented by prestige items like the BORA Classic downdraft hob and Quooker Flex boiling tap.
“I worked closely with the clients who quickly gave me a picture of how they wished to live in the space and utilise it most effectively. As such, I was able to design a kitchen to fit with their lifestyle, giving them room to cook, dine and relax in a comfortable living space.
The clients were delighted with the fusion of the textured sawn oak on the island and the soft grey painted cabinetry and the two finishes work together to create an elegant, minimalist design full of understated beauty.
The traditional elements of the Rencraft cabinetry such as the bevelled, in-frame door detail gently blend with the modern handle-less flat fronted timber island, to give a stunning yet simple finish.”

Our client’s family were avid readers and so they were keen to have plenty of shelves to keep their favourite books on display and we love how the colours of their carefully curated collection contrast with the soft grey tones of the cabinetry. This reading room truly is a haven of peace and calm and we are sure it will see many a novel being devoured within its walls for years to come.
The family was also wanted to create a TV snug which would double as a playroom and so we created plenty of space for Lego, board games, toys and DVDs to be kept in the cupboards which sit alongside the flat-screen television on the wall.
With our clients’ busy lifestyle, creating a calming space for the master bedroom suite was key for peaceful nights’ sleep without clutter or clothes on show. To match the cabinetry on the ground floor, we designed and hand-painted this run of wardrobes which comfortably house plenty of hanging space for dresses, suits and skirts, as well as ample drawers for sweaters, t-shirts and socks, with the addition of shelving for handbags and footwear.
In the dressing room area, we also handmade this beautiful walnut vanity table which sits facing a large mirror and provides six drawers for make-up, jewellery and small electrical items such as a hairdryer to be stored.
