Sevenoaks Family Home

WHOLE HOUSE PROJECT

Property

A substantial 6-bedroom property on an exclusive road in Sevenoaks.

In a Nutshell

A whole house project including an open plan kitchen living space, TV snug, boot room, cinema room and bar plus bedrooms with bathroom cabinetry and walk-in dressing rooms.

A Home Transformed

Some homes are simply waiting to become what they were always meant to be, and this substantial family residence in Sevenoaks, Kent, was just such a house. With its charming character and beautifully proportioned rooms bursting with potential, this was a property ready to be transformed from top to bottom.

The journey began with a bespoke kitchen, but as with many of our client relationships, the project evolved. As we moved from the first design consultation to fitting the last drawer and hand-painting the final cabinet, our clients fell in love with the whole Rencraft process. So impressed were they by the quality of our craftsmanship, the integrity of the materials and the care with which every detail had been considered, they concluded that a kitchen was only the beginning of their Rencraft journey.

Room by room, Rencraft was invited back into this home to continue the story. Chapter by chapter, we designed and handmade a boot room, bar, dressing rooms, bathroom cabinetry, bedroom wardrobes, dining room furniture and a family snug, with each new space receiving the same devoted attention as the kitchen.

The Kitchen Space

At the centre of this home sits a beautifully considered kitchen that balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary flair. Handmade in-frame cabinetry gives a nod to the property’s period character, while the stained oak and clean lines lend a quieter, more modern confidence to the design.

To make the most of the natural light flooding in from the garden, we chose a carefully layered palette of soft blues, including Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue for the island, so creating distinct zones within the space, whilst still maintaining an elegant sense of cohesion.

As ever with Rencraft’s bespoke kitchens, we incorporated thoughtful details to quietly elevate the design, from bespoke Ged Kennett hardware to luxurious walnut drawer interiors that reveal the care and craftsmanship behind every piece of cabinetry.

The Book Nook

This kitchen hideaway brings an almost library-like feel to the informal area of what is very much the heart of this home. We built deep shelves in stained oak, punctuated with integrated lighting to create a backdrop for cookbooks, ceramics and the collections of beautiful treasures that accumulate naturally over time.

The real showstopper is the aged copper panelling sitting behind the shelves. With its warm, burnished surface developing character and depth over time, it is a material choice that speaks quietly of confidence and connoisseurship in a home that is not afraid to show its unique personality, in much the same way as the painted oak of the boot room.

Beauty Begins At The Back Door

The boot room is often the unsung hero of any busy family home and the brief from our client was both clear and rather wise: create a functional space and choose a finish that would be forgiving over time, avoiding a constant battle against the inevitable wear of family life.

Our solution was painted oak with the natural grain showing through, meaning every scuff and knock would become part of the story rather than a source of anxiety. Over the years, the natural character of the timber has begun to emerge through the paint, lending an air of beautiful, lived-in charm.

To make the space as user-friendly as possible, we designed a generous bench seat made from natural oiled oak to run along one wall, offering a comfortable spot to pull on boots whilst concealing considerable storage beneath courtesy of a lift-up lid. To add texture, classic tongue-and-groove panels sit behind the row of coat pegs, grounding the room with a crafted, traditional quality.

To provide storage for shoes and boots, we fashioned pigeonholes in various sizes, bringing satisfying order to the perennial problem of shoe organisation, whilst a run of hanging storage within closed cupboards and deep drawers underneath keeps coats, school blazers, scarves and hats neatly out of sight. The result is a room that looks effortlessly composed, no matter how chaotic the morning rush.

Entertaining Elevated

There is something incredibly sophisticated about a dedicated home bar, and this bespoke example built into the eaves was designed with the expert host very much in mind.

To create an elegant feel, we used flat-stained oak panelling, with its clean lines providing a beautiful backdrop for the more industrial look of the Quooker tap, which sits neatly alongside a gunmetal undercounter sink. At the back of the bar, an antique bronze mirror reflects the light and draws the eye towards the stained oak shelving set against it, creating the perfect stage for a thoughtfully curated collection of favourite tipples.

To finish the look, we added LED strip lighting behind the shelving, lending the whole arrangement a warm, ambient glow that invites guests to linger just a little longer.

As ever, the practical details of this space are every bit as considered as the decorative ones, with a dishwasher, wine cooler and dedicated drinks fridge sitting beneath the counter, meaning that everything from a chilled Chablis to a perfectly iced tonic is always within easy reach.

The Big Picture

Where many media rooms settle for a wall-mounted screen and a Gordian tangle of cables, this space demanded rather more. We designed a run of low drawers beneath the cinema screen to bring both structure and practical storage to the room. A beautiful solid oak benchtop provides a clean horizontal line that anchors the whole space.

The real magic is hidden away, however, as we integrated discreet speakers within the cabinetry itself, delivering an audio experience that is entirely invisible. The result is a room that feels both impeccably refined and intelligently considered, providing a space for building a tradition of family film nights rather than merely a room for watching television.

His & Her Dressing Rooms

Our aim with the two dressing rooms was to create two distinct spaces for two different personalities while ensuring they still felt part of the same cohesive design. To achieve this, we designed full-height, handcrafted wardrobes in each room. The custom cornicing blends into the plasterwork in perfect continuity, as though the wardrobes and the architecture had been designed together from the very beginning.

“His” dressing room is clad entirely in walnut: rich, dark-grained and quietly masculine, with the beautiful natural material extending to the worktop, creating a seamless flow from floor to ceiling.

“Her” dressing room takes a different but equally considered path, with hand-painted cabinetry in a soft grey tone topped with a glass worktop that brings lightness and modern refinement to the space.

To tie the spaces together, both rooms share the same exquisite Jed Kennett hardware, a detail that quietly connects them, whilst LED lighting illuminates every hanging rail and drawer. With custom drawer dividers keeping jewellery, accessories and folded garments in beautiful, calm order, dedicated shoe racks and full-length mirrors complete each room.

The Curve of Perfection

Bathrooms are spaces where materials are rigorously put through their paces, with daily splashes and steam presenting a constant challenge, and this room’s unique curved cabinetry was designed to be as durable as it is beautiful.

Our talented team of craftsmen relished the challenge of handcrafting a bespoke walnut mirror cupboard, perfectly curved to fit the wall behind.

The vanity unit beneath echoes that same curved walnut design, to which we added an undermounted ceramic sink set into a quartz worktop that brings cool, clean contrast to the warmth of the wood. The West One shower fittings complement the overall palette beautifully, with every chrome edge and ceramic detail chosen to sit in harmony rather than compete.

Calm By Design

In a bedroom designed for a teenager, we fashioned a run of wardrobes to follow the same style established in the adult dressing rooms: ceiling-height cabinetry with cornicing that wraps the room in a seamless architectural embrace.

The effect is one of calm, with every item of clothing, school uniform and sports kit given a dedicated home, meaning the room itself is easily kept spotless and serene.

To finish the space, we seamlessly incorporated an integrated desk within the run of cabinetry, offering a quiet place for homework or revision without disturbing the overall peace of the room.

The Art Of The Table

In the dining room, we created an elegantly imposing bookcase, traditional in its proportions and detailing but clever in its design. Built with adjustable shelving that makes it genuinely useful as well as handsome, the painted tongue-and-groove back panels add texture and depth behind the collection of meticulously organised books, decanters and much-cherished decorative objects it houses.

An oak worktop sits between the open shelving above and the closed cupboard beneath, providing a horizontal element that ties the piece together and offers a practical surface for serving and display.

Custom freestanding furniture completes the room, creating a dining space that feels considered from every angle and at every hour of the day.

Where The Day Unwinds

This family room was designed with one very clear ambition: to create a room where daily life could happen without daily life constantly showing.

Large, generously proportioned storage drawers accommodate the inevitable accumulation of toys, throws, remotes and board games that are the hallmark of a room that is properly used and properly loved.

The media wall is another example of the thoughtful detail we pride ourselves on, with slatted acoustic panelling softening the sound of the room whilst lending the space a contemporary warmth.

The result is a cosy, clever snug where the family can truly switch off and unwind.

A Place Called Home

Bespoke handmade luxury kitchen in Sevenoaks

A single conversation about a family kitchen ended up transforming a whole house into a sophisticated yet welcoming dream home. Taken together, these spaces represent something greater than the sum of their parts: a home that has been carefully considered from the boot room to the bedroom, from the bar to the bookcase, and designed so every space works in perfect harmony.

It is the nature of truly well-made furniture and cabinetry that the longer you live with it, the more you appreciate it. Just as the grain of the walnut deepens, the painted oak acquires its gentle patina and the antique bronze mirror softens, a Rencraft home does not merely peak on the day of installation. It simply gets better.
